Getting Hired As an Entry-Level Programmer?

Filed under: Nerd Stuff — admin @ 11:14 pm

An anonymous reader writes “I received a state university degree in Computer Science. After graduation, I immediately took jobs in QA to pay the bills while waiting for other opportunities, which of course turned out to be as naive as it sounds. I’ve been working QA for several years now and my resume does not show the right kind of work experience for programming. On the whole I’m probably no better as a a candidate than a CS graduate fresh out of college. But all of the job postings out in the real world are looking for people with 2-5 years of programming work experience. How do you build up those first 2 years of experience? What kinds of companies hire programmers with no prior experience?”

httpx 0.0.4 (Default branch)

Filed under: Software — admin @ 9:41 pm

Screenshot
Httpx takes over the front-line position of
binding and listening on the public address and
port of your virtual Web hosting server. In this
role, it scans incoming requests looking for the
HTTP/1.1 Host: request header entity. Once the
Host: value is found for a given request, it is
routed to a UNIX domain socket in the local file
system located through a database lookup. Over
this UNIX domain socket, an inter-process
descriptor pass occurs to a Web server modified
slightly to receive TCP socket descriptors passed
over a UNIX domain socket instead of binding,
listening for, and accepting TCP sockets. This
allows vhosts to share an IP address while having
private, host-specific, potentially unique httpd
contexts.

License: GNU General Public License v2

Changes:
A minor bug in the HTTP/1.1 parser fsm has been fixed. This bug prevented httpx from accepting request headers that were not the Host: header in version 0.0.3. A workaround has also been added to make httpx usable on current Linux kernels (this is hopefully not needed for long, as work has already been done to resolve these issues by the Linux net developers). Some documentation additions were made, and daemontools integration stubs were added to the distribution.

libkate 0.2.4 (Default branch)

Filed under: Software — admin @ 9:41 pm

Kate is a codec for karaoke and text encapsulation for Ogg. Most of the time, this would be multiplexed with audio/video to carry subtitles, song lyrics (with or without karaoke data), etc, but it doesn’t have to be. A possible use of a lone Kate stream would be an e-book. Moreover, the motion feature gives Kate a powerful means to describe arbitrary curves, so hand drawing of shapes can be achieved. This was originally meant for karaoke use, but can be used for any purpose. Motions can be attached to various semantics, like position or color, so scrolling or fading text can be defined.

License: BSD License (revised)

Changes:
Both hexadecimal and decimal numeric entities are
now supported. katedec can now output LRC files.
kateenc now supports variable timestamping
precision in LRC files. More tweaks were made to

Back In Time 0.6 (Default branch)

Filed under: Software — admin @ 9:41 pm

Screenshot
Back In Time is a simple backup system for the GNOME desktop inspired by the “flyback project” and “TimeVault”. The backup is done by taking snapshots of a specified set of directories. All you have to do is configure: where to save snapshot, what directories to backup, and when a backup should be done (manually, every hour, every day, every week, or every month). It acts as a “user mode” backup system. This means that you can backup and restore only folders to which you have write access.

License: GNU General Public License v2

Changes:
When the program makes a snapshot, it displays an
icon in the systray area. The background color for
group items in the timeline and places better
reflects the system color scheme. During
restoration, only the restore button is grayed
(even if everything is blocked).

ExactImage 0.6.3 (Default branch)

Filed under: Software — admin @ 9:41 pm

ExactImage is a fast C++ image processing library.
Unlike ImageMagick, it allows operation in several
color spaces and bit depths natively, resulting in
much lower memory and computational requirements.
Some optimized algorithms operate in 1/20 of the
time ImageMagick requires, and displaying large
images can be as fast as 1/10 of the time the
“display” program takes.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
Dynamic range normalization was reimplemented
using the new image iterator to support all
bit-depths as well as increased speed. The
empty-page detection again internally uses the
black and white optimization for more consistent
results, and the threshold for black and white
images can now be specified during colorspace
conversion via the external SWIG wrapped API.
