Science News reports on a paper to be published in Physical Review Letters in which an international team of researchers describes their computer simulation of the most violent collision imaginable: two black holes colliding head-on at nearly light-speed. Even in this extreme scenario, Roger Penrose’s weak cosmic censorship hypothesis seems to hold — the resulting black hole (after the gravitational waves have died down) retains its event horizon. “Mathematically, ‘naked’ singularities, or those without event horizons, can exist, but physicists wouldn’t know what to make of them. All known mechanisms for the formation of singularities also create an event horizon, and Penrose conjectured that there must be some physical principle — a ‘cosmic censor’ — that forbids singularity nakedness…”

GChart is a pure-GWT client-side charting
solution. It does not require browser plugins,
external JavaScript, or server round-trips. The
package supports bar, line, and pie charts, custom ticks, left and right y axes, grid-lines, annotated data points, and more.
License: The Apache License 2.0
Changes:
Client-side, line charts are now much faster and better looking thanks to a new interface that lets you plug an external GWT vector graphics library (canvas) into GChart. The updated live demo plugs into the GWT incubator’s graphics library to update a sine/cosine chart 10 times faster in IE7 and 20 times faster in FF2, compared to using GChart’s built-in, HTML-rectangle-based algorithms.

tests of text user interfaces. It is meant as a
complement to the widespread use of unit tests,
and uses concepts known from GUI testing tools
with the difference that it applies them

interfaces. It consists of a recorder that records
the interaction with an application under tests
and generates a Ruby script that replays the same
interaction, optionally with the same timing. Ruby
replaying is supported through a native Ruby module.

Seed7 is a general purpose programming language.
It is a higher level language compared to Ada,
C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements and
operators can be declared easily. Functions with
type results and type parameters are more elegant
than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and
not in places when other solutions are more
obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts
of other programming languages, it is generally
not considered as a direct descendant of any other
programming language.
License: GNU General Public License (GPL)
Changes:
The chapter about primitive actions in the manual was improved. The definition of STD_NULL in the seed7_05.s7i library was improved to support read and write operations with STD_NULL. The bas7.sd7 (basic interpreter) example program was improved. The compiler (comp.sd7) was improved to support local interface declarations and dynamic functions that refer to constant values. Several improvements were made to support compilation with the cl compiler from MSVC and the bcc32 compiler. The function bigCLit() was improved to avoid C code that the cl C compiler miscompiles to the wrong machine code.

A spurious MIDI events recording bug has been fixed. Audio track monitoring and plug-in loop processing has been slightly improved if not fixed. The MIDI clip editor has improved precision and correct snapping. Multiple track mute and solo one-click toggling. Better MIDI connection persistence across sessions. Record-armed tracks aren’t muted on playback anymore. Optimized audio clip waveform caching and drawing. Many other fixes.

AntTweakBar is a small and easy-to-use C/C++ library that allows programmers to quickly add a light and intuitive GUI into OpenGL or DirectX based graphic programs to interactively tweak them. Program variables can be linked to a graphical control that allows users to modify them. Mordred is a tool for mechanical engineers to
calculate the movements and forces of a mechanical
system. For the existence of a solution, it is
necessary that the system be statically statically
determinate. The results can be logged to a
textual report, and can be displayed graphically.
You define your mechanism graphically, for the
most part, but can define your forces and
coordinates textually in order to reach full
precision. It requires Java 6 in order to run.

SDoP (Simple DocBook Processor) reads a DocBook
XML file, processes it into typeset pages, and
outputs the result as PostScript (which can easily
be converted to a PDF). It is “simple” because it
supports only a subset of DocBook, and also
because it does not make use of a DTD or
stylesheets or any other heavyweight apparatus. It
is a single program. SDoP is used to format the
Exim reference manual.
