Lbzip2 0.05 (Default branch)

Filed under: Software — admin @ 11:57 pm

Screenshot
Lbzip2 is a Pthreads-based parallel bzip2/bunzip2 filter, passable to GNU tar with the –use-compress-program option. It isn’t restricted to regular files on input, nor output. Successful splitting for decompression isn’t guaranteed, just very likely (failure is detected). Splitting in both modes and compression itself occur with an approximate 900k block size. On an Athlon-64 X2 6000+, lbzip2 was 92% faster than standard bzip2 when compressing, and 45% faster when decompressing (based on wall clock time). Lbzip2 strives to be portable by requiring UNIX 98 APIs only, besides an unmodified libbz2.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
The decompressor was redesigned: all CPU-bound operations were moved into the worker threads, so that now, besides the muxer, the splitter is purely I/O-bound too. Lbzip2 supports tracing its memory allocation with the new “-t” option. Both the compressor and decompressor were retested.

The Fedora-Red Hat Crisis

Filed under: Nerd Stuff — admin @ 11:02 pm

jammag writes “When Linux journalist Bruce Byfield tried to dig for details about the security breach in Fedora’s servers, a Red Hat publicist told him the official statement — written in non-informative corporate-speak — was all he would get. In the wake of Red Hat’s tight-lipped handling of the breach, even Fedora’s board was unhappy, as Byfield details. He concludes: ‘If Red Hat, one of the epitomes of a successful FOSS-based business, can ignore FOSS when to do so is corporately convenient, then what chance do we have that other companies — especially publicly-traded ones — will act any better?’”

GNU ddrescue 1.9-pre1 (Development branch)

Filed under: Software — admin @ 10:02 pm

Screenshot
GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies
data from one file or block device (hard disc,
cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue data
in case of read errors. GNU ddrescue does not
truncate the output file if not asked to. So,
every time you run it on the same output file, it
tries to fill in the gaps. The basic operation of
GNU ddrescue is fully automatic. That is, you
don’t have to wait for an error, stop the program,
read the log, run it in reverse mode, etc. If you
use the logfile feature of GNU ddrescue, the data
is rescued very efficiently (only the needed blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume it later at the same point.
