Speculation On Large-Scale Phone Location Snooping

Filed under: Nerd Stuff — admin @ 8:48 pm

An anonymous reader recommends a speculative blog entry by Chris Soghoian up on CNet. Soghoian makes a convincing case that the NSA could be using loopholes in the law to gather real-time location information on the mobile phones of millions of people. There is no hard evidence that this is happening, but the blog post sheds light on the dense undergrowth of companies populating the wireless space that could be easy pickings for a National Security Letter with a gag order attached. “While these household names of the telecom industry [AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint] almost certainly helped the government to illegally snoop on their customers, statements by a number of legal experts suggest that collaboration with the NSA may run far deeper into the wireless phone industry. With over 3,000 wireless companies operating in the United States, the majority of industry-aided snooping likely occurs under the radar, with the dirty work being handled by companies that most consumers have never heard of.”

libSpiff 1.0.0rc3 (Default branch)

Filed under: Software — admin @ 7:40 pm

libSpiff is a C++ library for reading and writing
XSPF playlists. Both version 0 and 1 are
supported. It is the official reference
implementation for XSPF of the Xiph.Org Foundation.

License: BSD License (revised)

Changes:
This release fully implements the error model introduced in 1.0.0rc1. libSpiff has been a very strict parser from the beginning; too strict for real world XSPF files. In a recent test on about 650 XSPF files from the Internet, only 47% held valid XSPF content. With this version’s support for error skipping, you can now read 73% of these files, mainly leaving only files with errors on the XML level out. Still, when needed, libSpiff can act as a validator as strict as before. Please note this release is neither source- nor binary-compatible.

EmptyCrate Game Engine 2 (Default branch)

Filed under: Software — admin @ 7:40 pm

EmptyCrate Game Engine allows for the creation of
first person 2d adventure games using a Drupal

using a Flash 9 application embedded in the Drupal
page, making the adventure game instantly
available to virtually anyone with an Internet

culmination of several years of ideas which

to use items with each other inside of the
inventory was added. The dimensions of the Flash
game player were fixed to make sure it works
