The Netty project is an effort to provide an
asynchronous, event-driven network application
framework for rapid development of maintainable, high-performance, high-scalability protocol
servers and clients. It includes related
out-of-the-box protocol extensions and a tool
suite.

Changes:
The first release candidate with a frozen API. Various convenience methods were added to ChannelBuffer. A user can decide what logging framework Netty should use now.

Gmsh is an automatic 3D finite element grid
generator with built-in CAD and post-processing
facilities. Its design goal is to provide a simple
meshing tool for academic problems with parametric
input and advanced visualization capabilities. It
is built around four modules: geometry, mesh,
solver, and post-processing. The specification of
any input to these modules is done either
interactively using the graphical user interface
(based on FLTK and OpenGL) or in ASCII text files
using Gmsh’s own scripting language.

Changes:
This release adds support for Metis and Chaco mesh partitioners, variable deletion in geo files, and point datasets in model-based post-processing views.
Mylene is a command line MPEG audio player. It can
play plain and system embedded MPEG audio streams.
It works for Linux OSS and ALSA emulated OSS and Mac OS X. The player can be used interactively by telling it to establish a UNIX or INET server on which commands can be received. The seek-h262 MPEG decoder is
required for audio and system MPEG decoding.

Changes:
Two random access related bugs (one of which was introduced in the previous release) were fixed. Some portability issues have been addressed. MPEG audio stream random access has been further refined.

JPawlak writes “Researchers believe that it may be possible to increase the speed of the Internet by slowing down certain parts of it by using metamaterials. Metamaterials could be used to replace the bulky and slow electronics that route Internet information, allowing for faster Internet speeds. As data nears its destination, the frequencies must be separated. The light must then be converted into electrical signals, which are stored, routed, and converted back into optical signals. The conversion not only adds significant cost and complexity to the process, but slows down the transmission as well. However, if the light signals could be slowed during the switching process, they would not need to be converted into an electrical signal. ‘The ability to slow the light could be a tremendous force for telecoms that is sure to enhance speed and efficiency,’ says University of California professor Xiang Zhang.”
